Let Experienced Lawyers Handle Your Mesothelioma Case
What Is Mesothelioma?
Most cases of mesothelioma begin when tumors form in the membranes lining the lungs and chest cavity. This is known as pleural mesothelioma. Less commonly, mesothelioma tumors may attack the membranes lining the stomach (peritoneal mesothelioma).
Early symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:
- Difficulty in breathing (dyspnea)
- Pain in the chest
- Hoarseness
These problems may also be signs of other respiratory diseases, so it is important to tell your doctor if you have been exposed to asbestos. Mesothelioma takes several decades to develop after initial contact with asbestos, so your health must be carefully monitored over the years. To make an accurate diagnosis, your doctor may perform tests such as chest x–rays, CT scans and tissue sampling.
Although mesothelioma is a very serious, often fatal disease, some treatments can prolong survival, ease pain and improve the quality of life. Some patients have benefited from extensive surgery that removes portions of the lung, the pleura (the lining of the lung), the pericardium (the lining of the heart), and the diaphragm. The idea is to remove the maximum number of tumor cells, then follow with chemotherapy or radiation to ensure the death of cancer cells.
Other patients whose mesothelioma is more advanced may not be able to withstand the rigors of surgery. A newer drug, Alimta® (pemetrexed), was approved in February 2004 to treat pleural mesothelioma. It must be used along with a platinum compound, cisplatin. Alimta® will not cure mesothelioma, but may ease symptoms.
Researchers are constantly on the lookout for new drugs and other mesothelioma treatment methods, so there is still reason for hope. Consult with your physician about clinical trials, current therapies and the treatment that is best for you or your family member.
